One year gone
One year gone is a project in which I let go and let forces other than myself shape the final outcome of my work through entropy. Over the course of a year I have let five elements process five handmade panels of birch. The only control I have is where I placed the panels, which is both a release and a challenge. I remain on the sideline and can only observe the slow but certain changes in the panels as entropy takes its course
Entropy is internal disorder in a system where everything moves towards chaos and destruction over time. The longer it takes, the more chaos there is. We see this on a daily basis through the erosion around us caused by the forces of nature. The forces of entropy are constantly present, and it is these forces that I seek to map in my works. To get an overview of the forces, one has to look at the "destructions" that occur in that place. I made five panels to investigate ; to map out a years entropy. Each year has a different climate and therefore the result will never be the same or repeatable.
The five panels measure 175 x 90 x 4,2 cm and each consist of eight planks of solid birch glued together and not further processed. This creates panels with a wholeness and strength while still susceptible to destruction. The panels was been placed on a farm in the Hardanger region of western Norway in January 2022. Here they have been isolated in contact with different elements, which are the following: Sea water, earth, air, sheep in a barn and fresh water in the form of a river. It is the lower part of the panels that has mainly been in contact with the elements, which has created a visual contract from top to bottom. The exhibition consists of more than space and material alone, it also consists of the time that has been compressed into the work. Furthermore, the panels have changed as they adapted to the dry climate in the gallery. White mold has formed and the darker tones have become lighter creating ever-changing works.
